Video Diary- Shoot Three (15/01/14)

Dear filming diary,

Today Emily and I met at my house around seven ish to complete our third shoot. I did Emily's hair and make-up in the kitchen whilst looking at my blog for the inspiration of hair and make-up. I also brought her the outfit I wanted her to wear and arranged  which slides from my storyboard I would be filming tonight.

I brought a yellow dress for Emily to wear, an outfit i created when sketching first ideas for my music video. I decided on a yellow dress due to the conventions of my music lyrics, when florence sings "tore my yellow dress." Not only did I want the video to match the song, but the Mise-en-scene within.

Once I had finished hair and make-up, I took the scenes from my story board and ventured to each location to begin filming. The first part of filming I shot was at the house, with the stairs and the glass door matching the lyrics of '0n this champagne drunken home'. This worked really well as the colours on the glass door were very bright and powerful, mixing with the colours of reds, yellows and a slight hint of gold, again matching with the lyrics. I also shot a few scenes at the piano, of emily playing and resting on the piano. I wanted the house to look abandoned as if it were a memory, rather than an actual exiting home, and so I added dead and dried leaves around the house, as well as darkly coloured and dried poperie on the piano and the keys. This created a really cool effect, as well as fitting with the conventions of my concept of music video idea.

We then went on to the corridor shot, where Emily is seen running down, but tripping and swaying as she goes. When shooting this I had a vision of seeing it in slow motion and so when editing this effect will be made.
In the corridor where you see Emily running, there is a balcony, and if you look over it you see the dinner table below. To shoot some possible digi-pak photos i arranged Emily to lie on the dinner table laying out her hair and placing some flowers and leaves into her hair. I then went over the balcony to take some images (like a birds eye view) of Emily. I also took possible digi-pak photos with Emily at the piano and Emily on the bed as seen at the right hand side of this text.

I felt that the shooting today was really useful and i really enjoyed it.
The possible digi-pak photos look really effective and cool, and the filming went really well to the pre planned thoughts in my head.

All together today was a hit.

Write on my next shoot day.

xoxo

Richard Dyer (1983)

Richard Dyer (1983)

Richard Dyer came up with the theory of how media texts represent themselves to a society and an audience. He quoted "how we are seen determines how we are treated, how we treat others is based on how we see them. How we see them comes from representation". (Dyer 1983) From this quote you can tell exactly what his theory is about and how is relates to real ice situations. If you are seen wearing dirty clothes and greasy hair you are seen as a dirty person which from these impressions can be seen from stereotypes, again linking to Perkins theory.

This theory put to my music video, shows a very controversial issue. My music video will be seen as a dark video, not only from the narrative i have chosen but from the genre and the artist people will already recognise what the video will be like especially after hearing the song, so if they didn't see what they exact the media text would have no ideology.

add more…...

Laura Mulvey (1975) Male Gaze

Laura Mulvey (1975)

Laura Mulvey came up with the theory of the 'Male Gaze'. This is reprinting how men see women, how women see women and how women see themselves.
This video of Rhianna's 'pour it up' single, shows female pole dancers wearing thong bikinis and very skimpy tops. It also shows Rhianna grinding against a chair and wearing a diamond bra that barley covers up a lot of her chest area. This and the way that they are dancing-sticking their bums out and boobs out- stereotypically represents a 'slutty' women which in the eyes of men is again stereotyped as the 'effect women'. Because men would like this it represents the theory of the male gaze. Not only will men look at this and like it, but because men like it, women will look at it and wish that they could be like it so that the men look at them. Or women will loo at themselves and compare themselves to the women dancing in this video. This then becomes a controversial issue, creating problems in the way women are seen through the male gaze, and how then women are represented through videos and stereotyped as certain idols.

In terms of comparing shots in my music video to this, would show that i have used Mulvey's theory of the male gaze. I have used a pretty, attractive women for my cast member, and in certain scenes like the green screen room, the beach and the bath scenes it shows certain areas of the body, such as legs and in the bath the shirt become see through showing a slight image of the underwear worn underneath. This again represents what mulvey taught about by the make gaze and may concern some women in how they see themselves and how men see them.

John Berger (1972)

John Berger, is another theorist that link with the ideas of Laura Mulvey. His theory was 'the ways of seeing' and again represents the ways in which people see others and themselves.

In this picture of beyonce, it shows her singing in a room, wearing her wedding lingerie. Well normally who would do this? so this is clear dressing for a man or for herself, but seen as the words are the best thing you never had, it could represent that she's dressing for her man and saying ha, look what you missed out on. This represents Beregers theory and link the mulvey's theory all representing how others see and how we see ourselves.

Levi Strauss (1958) Binary Opposites

Levi Strauss (1958)

Levi Strauss came up with the theory of binary opposites. This theory was basically representing the fact, that to everyone good character, such as; batman, there would be a bad character, such as; the joker.

In terms of my music video, levi Strauss's theory is true but only to a certain extent. In my music video the girl is the good character, however the depressions and memories from her childhood are the bad character. so its not the same in terms of bad people against good people but in a way his theory does apply in the narrative of my music video.

Ancillary Texts- convention analysis.

Here I have analysed 3
of my artists ancillary texts. I have talked about the key conventions of the production of them and expresses my thoughts on why they have placed them there. This is a CD back and from along with a poster for the same album.

Ancillary Texts

I researched some album art, from a  collection of Florence and the Machine's albums. By researching these, it allowed me to understand her personanility and what type of art she likes. But by looking at these you can see that she is a dark sole and the art and photos placed on her albums all symbolises her weirdness.

Framing heights

I collected together a range of images, displaying the different camera frames and angles that i will be using throughout the process of making my music video. Each display the different frames in a different way. The first shows them in an actual situation, with real life photographs. The others are all cartoons/silhouettes, showing the different angels. I chose all of these images as they explain the angles and frames for every situation of my work. For example my storyboard and anamatic are drawn in pencil- demonstrating cartoons, which is why i have displayed the three cartoon images. The real life image is so that you can easily see my different choice of framing, when my first edits and my final music video is made.
